Fleming Island is a small bedroom town in Clay county Florida. What is a bedroom town?! We are glad you asked! It is defined as a small community that has no major industries and that is lived in by people who go to another town or city to work.

Fleming Island was named after an Irish man named George Fleming, who was granted this land by a spanish governor in east Florida for his military services. In 1942 the area was undeveloped and the united states navy constructed asphalt runways on the site and established naval outlying fields designated as NOLF Fleming Island that supported NAS Jacksonville.

The navy eventually abandoned the air field in the 1960s. because they couldn’t accommodate the new jets and operations for NAS Jacksonville.

From the 1960s -1970s the area was actually used as a drag racing strip. In the late 1990s they started developing Fleming Island Plantation.
